EMS supports Bright Blue Foods with tailored environmental Permit Training

EMS provided customised Permit Training to ensure that staff at Bright Blue Foods were familiar with their requirements to monitor emissions to air and water to comply with their permit.

Our experts delivered the training to help the senior leadership team gain awareness of what having a permit means in practice for operatives and wider staff. The permit training delivered is entirely bespoke to client needs and, in this case, increases awareness of the business’ permit

The Client

Bright Blue Foods (BBF) develops and manufactures a range of cake products including celebration cakes, fruit pies, and tarts, and Christmas cakes and variety of chilled desserts. BBF have an environmental permit and reached out to our team to receive Permit Training.

The Challenges

Our team provided comprehensive training that covered the enforcement powers of the Environment Agency (EA), as well as the overall environmental regulatory process. The training also included guidance on conducting audits for effluent and ensuring compliance with trade effluent discharge consents. Training also included ensuring that Bright Blue Foods understood how they should interpret monitoring data for the parameters in their permit to ensure compliance with it.

The training aimed to educate the senior leadership team on the importance of regulatory compliance and provided insights into the powers held by enforcement officers. Additionally, the training highlighted the importance of improved communication among departments and educated senior leadership on the procedures involved in applying for a permit variation. This training extended to the wider management team, emphasising the point that permit training is no longer merely optional, but an important aspect of business operations, encouraged by the EA.

The Solution

The Permit Training delivered by EMS discussed:

  1. Legal compliance, which ensured that leadership understood the fundamental requirements for staying within legal boundaries.
  2. An overview of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 to ensure staff were familiar with this crucial legislative framework.

  4. Information on the powers and enforcement capabilities of the Environment Agency so that leadership were aware of the implications of non-compliance.
  5. Sentencing procedures and guidelines were outlined to make staff aware of the potential consequences of failing to comply with regulations.
  6. An explanation of the consequences of environmental non-compliance, enabling leadership to understand the potential impacts on the business.
  7. Recognising when to report incidents
