learndirect is one of the largest providers of courses, qualifications, training and employment services in the UK. They flexibly deliver services and dedicated support to suit individual company needs.

learndirect already had an ISO 14001 system had been in place and EMS provided a flexible service to support the client in maintaining their certification. This included audits of the management system and environmental compliance.
Ongoing support from EMS has allowed key members of learndirect staff to take on the role of environmental management and to further improve its environmental management systems.
The Challenges
learndirect was becoming increasingly aware of its impact on the environment and a need to manage its environmental performance. This was becoming apparent through tenders and supplier questionnaires where the supply chain asked questions about environmental management and whether the company had an Environmental Management System. learndirect decided that a system certified to ISO 14001 was the best option for them as it showed commitment to environmental management through recognised third-party verification.
The Solution
learndirect approached EMS to provide support with developing an Environmental Management System to the ISO 14001 standard. EMS provided a qualified and dedicated Consultant with experience in ISO 14001 to develop the system. This was carried out at learndirect’s premises to ensure integration with the business and was flexible to the needs of the client. This resulted in successful certification of the Environmental Management System in 2012.
In addition to ISO 14001 support, EMS delivered training and knowledge transfer sessions to staff to increase environmental awareness across the business. Two members of staff attended the National Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate in Environmental Management to support them in implementing the newly developed Environmental Management System. A number of staff successfully completed the NEBOSH Award in Environmental Awareness at Work to give a broader understanding of environmental issues. learndirect has recognised that its supply chain has a big effect on their overall impact. To help support its supply chain partners, EMS delivered a series of webinars to provide environmental information and to support them in improving their environmental performance.
