Phosphorus pollution

A funded PhD opportunity is available with the Centre for Global Innovation at Lancaster University. This is an industry-led PhD which will work in collaboration with EMS and Northumbrian Water

The Project

Phosphorus pollution of catchments is a significant problem in the UK and is a particular problem in urban areas where its sources are multiple and complex.

This project is to develop a cost-effective and easily deployed system for understanding phosphate pressures in urban catchments. This would allow appropriate mitigation approaches to be designed and subsequently monitored to determine their effectiveness, which will help the UK meet regulatory targets.

The project is a collaboration between Environmental Monitoring Solutions Ltd and Northumbrian Water in order to test a low-cost passive sampler solution for monitoring phosphate to understand phosphate processes and pressures in complex urban catchments. Academic supervision for the PhD is provided by Professor John Quinton and Professor Hao Zhang from the Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster University.

Applicants should be educated to degree level with a 2:1 degree or better in Environmental Science, Geography, Chemistry, Engineering, Earth Sciences or a related discipline. Enterprise and Collaborative Partner
