iCAIR grand opening

ICAIR (The Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research Centre) is a brand-new facility located in Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. The Centre is set to officially open its doors on the 11th of October. EMS’ MD, Professor Pete Skipworth, is a member of the facility’s Strategic Steering Committee and is looking forward to the exciting new possibilities that ICAIR brings.

The Centre comprises unique facilities for investigating interactions between above and below ground infrastructure. It will promote and support collaborative work between academia and industry. A focus of this work will be on making the nation’s infrastructure more resilient to extreme events, brought about by climate change, and more adaptable to changing circumstances brought about by increased urbanisation.

Work at the Centre will bring the power of data, AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing to the field of infrastructure.

Pete is delighted to be a member of the facility’s Strategic Steering Committee, he says,

“We were recently able to help showcase the facility when we held a practitioners’ workshop on our AI based flood protection technology, CENTAUR. Senior people from the water industry were able to understand the possibilities that the centre will bring in making infrastructure more resilient.”

This national facility is jointly funded by the University of Sheffield, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
